Investment Advisory

Appropriate asset allocation is an important part of any financial strategy. We work with you to deploy your assets based on your spending needs as well as your desire to pass money on to future generations and charitable organisations. The better we understand your wealth's intended uses, the better we can match your portfolio's risk and expected return characteristics to your objectives.

Your asset allocation is implemented using a blend of proprietary and third-party investment strategies with one common goal in mind: to preserve and build your wealth. All investment managers compete for a spot on our platform, and to be considered, they must believe that buying securities at a discount to their intrinsic value and understanding what you own and why are the most effective approaches to safeguard and create wealth over time.

Asset Allocation Process

The investment teams at ABLS make asset allocation recommendations for a variety of client types, and our relationship teams use these recommendations as a starting point for combining our best thinking with investment and wealth planning advice tailored to your and your family's needs.

Our Core Investment Principles

  • We think that all markets are intrinsically inefficient, and that by carefully selecting securities, investors can produce excess returns while reducing the danger of permanent capital loss.
  • Bottom-Up Fundamental Research: We put our money into strategies that use rigorous fundamental analysis to forecast the value of each possible investment.
  • Value Orientation: We look for techniques that invest in securities that are trading at a discount to their intrinsic value*, giving the portfolio a cushion of safety.**
  • Long-Term Focus: We believe that the best way to earn great investment returns is to patiently wait for an investment's potential to be realised rather than being affected by short-term market volatility.
  • A Different Perspective on Risk: We believe that the greatest threat to your financial health is permanent capital loss, not market volatility. Market instability, we believe, presents opportunities to acquire high-quality assets at a discount to their current value.
  • Patience and discipline: We are patient investors. When nothing fulfils our investing criteria, we keep cash on hand, and we have the conviction to sell when an investment no longer provides acceptable returns compared to its risk.

*Intrinsic value is the value we believe a security has based on our examination of both tangible and intangible characteristics.
**When we believe there is a big discount to intrinsic value at the time of purchase, we use a margin of safety — we attempt to buy at or below 75% of our estimated intrinsic value.
